Almuñécar Aquarium Reopens 29 December After Major Renovations
Almuñécar Aquarium reopens 29 Dec 2025 after renovations! Sharks, rays & sea life in iconic tunnel – must-visit family spot on Costa Tropical.
Almuñécar Town Hall has announced that the Acuario de Almuñécar will reopen to the public on December 29, 2025, following years of closure and a comprehensive renovation project.
Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya shared the news during the annual Christmas meeting with local media, describing the reopening as a key milestone for the municipality. The facility, closed since 2021 due to severe structural damage from saltwater corrosion and inadequate original materials, has undergone repairs costing more than €250,000, funded by municipal resources and insurance (COPE.es, December 17, 2025).
The works involved replacing unsuitable components, reinforcing tanks, and upgrading filtration systems to ensure long-term safety and functionality, as highlighted in reports from local councillors (Ideal.es, December 16, 2025).
Located underground beneath Plaza Kuwait in central Almuñécar, the 3,000-square-metre aquarium is dedicated to Mediterranean marine life. Upon reopening, it will showcase more than 300 animals from over 270 species, including bull sharks, grey sharks, rays, seahorses, jellyfish, starfish, and sea cucumbers. A standout feature remains the 17-metre panoramic tunnel through the one-million-litre ocean tank, offering visitors an immersive underwater experience (GranadaHoy, December 16, 2025).
The reopening coincides with the busy holiday period, providing a timely boost to local tourism and family activities on the Costa Tropical. It forms part of broader municipal investments, including the upcoming inauguration of the new Mercado Municipal on February 28, 2026.
Exact ticket prices and opening hours are expected to be released soon via official channels. The aquarium's return is anticipated to enhance Almuñécar's appeal as a year-round destination for residents and visitors alike.
