Coastal Path Works Between Salobreña and Carchuna Set to Begin Before Summer
Senda Litoral works between Salobreña and Carchuna are set to begin before summer 2026, improving coastal access on the Costa Tropical.
Long-awaited works on the Senda Litoral stretch between Salobreña and Carchuna are expected to begin before the start of summer 2026, marking a significant step forward for coastal connectivity on the Costa Tropical.
The project will complete a missing section of the coastal path linking Salobreña with the eastern edge of Motril’s coastline, improving access for pedestrians and cyclists while reinforcing the area’s tourism infrastructure ahead of the high season.
A Key Missing Link on the Costa Tropical
The new section of the Senda Litoral will run parallel to the shoreline between Salobreña’s eastern boundary and the beaches of Carchuna-Calahonda, an area that currently lacks a continuous pedestrian route.
According to municipal planning documents, the project covers approximately 2.5 kilometres of coastline. It will include a mixed-use pedestrian and cycling path, safety railings in exposed sections, and environmental integration measures to protect dune areas and native vegetation.
Local officials in Salobreña have confirmed that preparatory work, including technical surveys and coordination with coastal authorities, is already underway. Construction is expected to begin in late spring, with completion targeted before the peak of the summer season if conditions allow.
Boost for Local Tourism and Mobility
The extension of the Senda Litoral is seen as more than a leisure improvement. On the Costa Tropical, coastal paths have increasingly become strategic infrastructure for sustainable tourism and local mobility.
Salobreña’s existing promenade attracts thousands of visitors annually, particularly during Easter and summer. However, the connection toward Carchuna has remained fragmented, limiting the potential for longer walking and cycling routes along the coast.
By linking Salobreña more seamlessly with Motril’s coastal districts, the project is expected to benefit local hospitality businesses, beach bars and small tourism operators in both municipalities. The area between Playa del Caletón in Salobreña and Playa de Carchuna has grown in popularity in recent years, particularly among domestic visitors from Granada Province and inland Andalusia.
Investment and Environmental Considerations
While final investment figures are pending confirmation, similar coastal path projects in Granada Province have ranged between €400,000 and €900,000 depending on terrain and materials used. Funding is expected to involve coordination between local councils and regional coastal authorities.
Environmental impact has been a central consideration in planning the new Senda Litoral section. Parts of the route pass near agricultural zones and sensitive coastal ecosystems. Engineers are reportedly prioritising elevated wooden walkways in certain sections to minimise disruption.
Residents in Carchuna have long called for improved pedestrian access, particularly during summer months when traffic along the coastal road intensifies. The new route is expected to reduce short-distance car use and offer a safer alternative for families and cyclists.
Strengthening Coastal Identity
Across Andalusia, coastal path networks have become symbols of modern, accessible shoreline planning. For the Costa Tropical, completing missing links strengthens not only mobility but also the region’s image as a year-round destination.
If completed on schedule, the Salobreña–Carchuna section of the Senda Litoral will be operational ahead of the busiest weeks of July and August. For locals who walk these beaches year-round and visitors discovering this stretch of Granada Province for the first time, the improvement promises a more connected and accessible coastline.
After years of discussion, the sound of construction machinery along this stretch of shore will signal something simple but significant: the coast is becoming easier to explore, one kilometre at a time.
