Local fishermen and supporters gather at Punta de la Mona in Almuñécar during a protest against proposed sport fishing restrictions along the Costa Tropical coastline.

Local fishermen and recreational anglers have taken to the streets of Almuñécar to protest proposed restrictions affecting sport fishing in the waters around Punta de la Mona.

Demonstrators organised a public protest through the town centre this week, voicing strong opposition to what they describe as an unfair ban that would prevent recreational fishing in parts of the coastal enclave. The measure, promoted by regional authorities, is reportedly linked to environmental protection efforts in the area.

Call for “Fair Regulation,” Not a Ban

Representatives of the fishing community argue they are not opposed to environmental protection but are demanding what they call a “balanced and justified regulation.”

According to organisers, they have requested detailed ecological reports that justify the need for a full prohibition. Fishermen say they want transparency regarding the condition of marine habitats and scientific evidence supporting the claim that restrictions are necessary for seabed recovery.

Many of those participating in the protest emphasised that sport and small-scale subsistence fishing form part of the long-standing maritime culture of the Costa Tropical.

Environmental Concerns at the Centre

Regional authorities have indicated that the restrictions are tied to marine conservation objectives. Punta de la Mona is known for its underwater biodiversity and is popular with divers as well as anglers.

Environmental groups have previously raised concerns about pressure on marine ecosystems along Granada’s coastline, particularly in areas with high recreational activity during peak tourism seasons.

A Broader Debate on Coastal Management

The dispute highlights a growing debate across Granada Province over how best to balance economic activity, tradition, and environmental sustainability.

For Almuñécar, where tourism and maritime recreation are central to the local economy, the outcome of discussions between authorities and fishing associations could set a precedent for how similar measures are handled elsewhere on the Costa Tropical.

Further meetings between representatives of the fishing community and regional officials are expected in the coming weeks as both sides seek a potential compromise.
